Spangenberg, November 26, 2024: When thinking about workplace ergonomics, many people first picture desk jobs. However, WIKUS takes a more holistic approach as part of its health management programme and the WIErgo project. According to the 2024 Health Report by Techniker Krankenkasse, musculoskeletal disorders, such as back pain, are among the most common causes of sick leave. To address this, WIKUS is not only focusing on ergonomic workstations in administrative areas but also analysing production workflows to reduce physical strain on employees.
Pilotprojekt mit der Universität Kassel
In collaboration with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Work and Organisational Psychology, a pilot project has been launched. During the welding of band saw blades, employees in the custom production department wore sensor-equipped suits to measure physical strain during their tasks. The data revealed specific activities, such as bending, working overhead, and wrist rotations, that lead to higher levels of strain.
The Future of Healthy Work
To improve workflows in custom production, WIKUS will introduce regular employee training on ergonomic working practices and health promotion. But WIKUS is taking it a step further: hand cuffs and exoskeletons are currently being tested to make tasks easier and reduce strain even further.
